Famous for its annual Opera Festival (Bayreuther Festspiele), Bayreuth attracts tourists not only for this event but for all its rich architecture and history, which have left the legacy that we can appreciate today.
The city has a close link with the famous German composer Richard Wagner, who moved there when he was experiencing financial difficulties, after the removal of his patron and friend King Ludwig II. Richard Wagner was looking for a place to present his works, and when he failed in the mission to raise funds for the construction of an opera house, his former friend King Ludwig II did not abandon him and financed Richard’s wish. In 1876 the Bayreuther Festspiele opened at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, Richard Wagner’s opera house.
Bayreuth Festspielhaus e o Festival
Since its debut, the festival has been held annually, being the most important in the city, welcoming those who admire classical music and wish to watch the impressive opera performances. The festival also attracts those who wish to know a little more about Richard Wagner’s work in the city where he chose to establish the diffusion, and then, the perpetuation of his work.

Bayreuth Hermitage
It was initially built to serve as a court emissary in 1715 by Margrave George Guilherme. However, in 1735, when Margrave Frederico took power, he presented his wife Guilhermina with the place, which she fell in love with, and started a wave of renovations and expansions in the property.
Much of what we see today at the Hermitage de Bayreuth is the result of Guilhermina’s enthusiasm, such as the New Palace, the upper grotto, and much of the works and sculptures in the beautiful gardens.
Nowadays it is a historical park with different attractions, among them the Old Palace, the New Palace, the Gruta do Dragão, and the beautifully landscaped garden, which had a large part of its elements renovated during the last 30 years.

Margravial Opera House

One of the wonders of Bayreuth is certainly the majestic Margravial Opera House, built between 1745 and 1750 at the request of Guilhermina of Prussia (the same as the Hermitage of Bayreuth), for her daughter’s wedding. Considered one of the most beautiful Baroque opera houses in the world, it is one of the few survivors in Europe.
