History of Oktoberfest

One day, a member of the Bavarian National Guard decided to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen with a grand horse race. The proposal was accepted by the king, and on October 17, five days after the wedding celebration began, the race was held. At this same event, people dressed in traditional attire to honor the prince and princess and presented them with gifts. The location where the celebration took place, and where it still occurs today, was named in honor of the princess and retains the same name. In 1819, Oktoberfest was recognized for its importance to the people, and the tradition remains alive to this day.

An interesting fact is that in the 19th century, Oktoberfest used to include an agricultural fair to encourage regional production. Today, this event still takes place every four years as part of the festival’s program.
